2023 Kenyon Review Writers Retreat for Educators

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers is excited to offer a summer writing experience for educators participating in the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards!

Educators with a student who receives regional recognition in the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are eligible to apply for this experience, hosted by the Kenyon Review. The selected educator-writers will join other participants for an online, six-day workshop series from June 19–24, 2023. More details about the retreat can be found on the Kenyon Review’s website.

This opportunity is generously made possible through the Dr. Ernest B. Fleishman Educators’ Fund and the Maurice R. Robinson Fund.

How to Apply

Visit our Submittable page on January 26 to access the application. The deadline to apply is February 23 at 11:59 pm ET.

Important Note: to be eligible for this scholarship, educators must apply through the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers Submittable page. Applications entered through the Kenyon Review’s application process will not be eligible for these scholarships. However, educators may also submit a separate submission to the Kenyon Review’s application portal; such applications will be reviewed independently in case a scholarship is not awarded through the Alliance.

Eligibility

Applicant must be the educator of at least one student who has received regional (Honorable Mention, Silver Key, Gold Key) recognition in the 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The recognition can be for art or writing.

Included in the Scholarship

Tuition coverage to the virtual, six-day workshop series will be granted to each educator-writer, in addition to a $200 stipend to support their writing.

Application Requirements

  • Completed application form submitted through Submittable.
  • 10-page writing sample of prose and/or poetry. Any font size or font style is accepted, but we prefer that prose be double-spaced and poetry single-spaced.
  • A personal statement reflecting on connections between your personal writing practice and your work as an educator.

The Selection Process

Twelve educator-writers will be selected through a competitive juried process. The committee’s criteria will focus on the quality of the submitted work (using the same rubric used to evaluate student work) and personal statement.

About the Dr. Ernest B. Fleishman Educators’ Fund

The Dr. Ernest B. Fleishman Educators’ Fund allows the Alliance to provide recognition, professional-development opportunities, and classroom materials to educators whose students excel in the Awards, especially those from under-resourced communities. The fund was formed in recognition of Dr. Ernest B. Fleishman, a champion of educators, long-time member of the Alliance Board of Directors, and former senior executive at Scholastic Inc.
