Art, Writing, and Giving

While most of us are preparing for the end of the year, students nationwide are racing to meet Scholastic Art & Writing Awards’ deadlines, submitting hundreds of thousands of original art and writing. At our peak, the Awards will receive over 6,000 entries a day.

The Awards has grown since it began in 1923, but the criteria remain the same – originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice. Together, through schools across the country, we  have inspired millions of teens to create. Over our 90 year history, the Awards have become the nation’s highest honor for creative teens. Today,  winners earn over $8 million in scholarships annually.

These creative teens follow in the footsteps of incredible Awards alumni. Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, John Baldessari, Joyce Carol Oates, Richard Avedon, Lena Dunham, Ned Vizzini, Zac Posen, and many others won their Awards while in high school.

Along with our 100+ regional affiliates, we are preparing to judge student submissions in the new year. All work will be blindly adjudicated, first regionally, and then nationally. Over 30,000 students across the country will earn regional awards (Gold Keys, Silver Keys, and honorable mention). 10,000+ Gold Key works will go on to be judged at the national level, and over 1,600 will win Gold and Silver Medals. These national winners will be invited to receive their Medals at our Award Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in June.

The generosity of our supporters makes this tremendous creative process possible. From corporate and foundation support, to the support of our Board and our many individual donors, every gift we receive ensures the Awards continue to grow and provide invaluable recognition to more and more students every year.

As you make your year-end philanthropic commitments, we hope you’ll consider a gift to support the Scholastic Awards. Your help will ensure the Awards continued positive impact on creative teens over the coming year and for years to come.
