Step Inside Our Artists-in-Residency Studio!

Due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy, the Alliance’s Atelier artists-in-residency studio has moved to the Winter Garden at the World Financial Center (220 Vesey Street). Step inside the new studio on Wednesday, December 19 from 12pm – 5pm, and see what’s been created in this year’s residency by our three Atelier artists: Andrea Burgay, Kyle James Dunn, and Joseph Parra. Each participant is a past Scholastic Art & Writing Awards winner, and follows in the footsteps of other alumni like Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, John Baldessari, Cy Twombly, Mel Bochner, Tom Otterness, and Erik Madigan Heck (just to name a few!). These three artists represent some of the most promising emerging young artists around, and we feel very lucky to have them in our program.

Learn more about them here. And, to see some examples of their work, visit our Flickr page. Have a question for the artists? Tweet @artandwriting using the hashtag #AWatelier.

Kyle James Dunn

Kyle’s current sculpture traces the transactions between cultural symbols, exploring the changing nature of imagery that is appropriated from its origin. He has shown his work in Washington D.C., Baltimore, Houston, Leipzeig, and Annemasse.

In 2012, Dunn earned his BFA in Interdisciplinary Sculpture from The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). He currently works as a technician in the sculpture studio Alchemy Paintworks, LLC, in Brooklyn, NY.

Joseph Parra

Joseph recently received a BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). He also studied at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Summer Seminar and The International School of Painting, Drawing, and Sculpture in Umbria, Italy. His work challenges the traditions of portraiture through acts of concealment and exposure; a reflection of the mind transposed onto a surface. Parra has exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC; the Margulies Warehouse in Miami; and The Baryshnikov Arts Center in NYC. He recently had a solo show in Milwaukee, WI, and exhibited with printmakers from all over the country in Oxford, MS. www.josephcparra.com
