Generative AI and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers

The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the nonprofit that presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, has been closely monitoring the rapid advancements in generative AI technology and their impacts on creative practice. To that end, over the past year and a half, the Alliance has convened a task force consisting of creative professionals, technologists, technology ethicists, lawyers, educators, and staff to advise on the potential use of generative AI in the creation of work that is entered in the Awards. The task force’s work is ongoing, and we are also engaging additional groups of program partners and educators to inform the Awards’ current and future policies.

For the upcoming 2024-2025 programming year—the Awards’ participation terms do not allow the use of generative AI technology in the creation of works entered into our program.

At the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, we acknowledge that many artists and writers are using generative AI as a tool to engage in the making of original work. We also understand that these technologies pose new and unique challenges for educators and creative practitioners alike. The Awards are committed to being forward-looking and to adapting to a landscape that is constantly shifting. In doing so, we seek input and feedback from our community. As we continue to study this issue, we look forward to sharing updated policies for future programming years that are both reflective of new ways of making art and writing, and also sensitive to their impact on teens, teachers, and the broader creative community.
