Our annual National Events is a time for teen creativity to shine. Held over three days, National Events brings together students, their families, and their educators, to New York City where teen medalists in the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are celebrated at a teen-only party, the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall, and our closing event, Student Showcase.
Check-In and Ticket Pick Up
National Events kicked off with Check-In and Ticket Pick Up. Students, their families, and their educators journeyed from across the nation to attend the 2019 Scholastic Awards National Events in NYC. Check-In is where attendees received their National Medals, had their official portraits taken, picked up their tickets to the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall, and purchased some Scholastic Awards merchandise.
Maker Prom
Maker Prom was a teens-only party for Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Medalists. A dance party that included making-stations, Maker Prom is always a good time! More than a dozen organizations and individuals set up stations throughout the venue where students could create art, make music, try out new technology, and so much more!
AICAD Reception
During Maker Prom 2019, parents of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Medalists attended the AICAD (Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design) reception to meet with colleges and universities from across the country and learn about their art programs.
Special Achievement Awards Breakfast
Students who received Special Achievement Awards in the 2019 Scholastic Awards were invited to a breakfast at the Scholastic Inc. headquarters. Representatives from our sponsors were also invited to give them the chance to meet the amazing teens who received special awards.
National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall
On Thursday, June 6, 2019, the nation’s most talented teens were honored at the 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Ceremony! Presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Scholastic Awards National Ceremony celebrated more than 700 student artists and writers from across the country at the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York City.
It was a star-studded affair with guests including Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress, writer, and producer Tina Fey, Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actress Rose Byrne, and the 22nd poet laureate of the United States Tracy K. Smith. Additionally, astronomer Lucianne Walkowicz received the 2019 Alumni Achievement Award, which was presented by fellow Scholastic Art & Writing Awards alumnus and fashion designer Zac Posen.
Student Showcase
Student Showcase was a chance for students who attended the Scholastic Awards’ National Events to talk about their work that was on display at Parsons School of Design and Pratt Institute’s Pratt Manhattan Gallery. From student-led art walks, panels on Gold Medal Portfolios and the National Student Poets Program, screenings of film and animation, to an open mic for National Medalists, teen creativity was front and center during the Student Showcase!
National Events is always a fun time as thousands of people come together to celebrate the nation’s most creative teens. The 2020 Scholastic Awards open on September 12, 2019–be sure to submit your work for the chance to be invited to National Events next year!
