Through our Scholastic Awards Summer Scholarship Program, creative students who have been recognized by the Scholastic Awards can apply for scholarships to attend art and writing summer programs across the country. We partner with universities, studios, workshops, and precollege programs to offer students exciting and rewarding opportunities to challenge themselves over the summer months. We reached out to our students and partners to learn more about the students attending the summer programs and how their creative skills developed over the summer.

Olivia Wilkerson-Carter attended the Putney School Summer Program to hone her jewelry-making skills. At Putney, Olivia was able to practice new wire manipulation techniques and fabricate jewelry she designed herself.

Snow Farm Summer welcomed Maria Zamudio to their program where she worked on paintings, drawings, and printmaking. Maria’s output of work was impressive, and the Snow Farm community was happy she joined them!

At the Juniper Institute for Young Writers, Asha Larson-Baldwin worked on her poetry (you can read a sample here). Of the program, Asha said, “This program really pushed me to try new things with my writing. Going in, I felt like I had a very distinct style and way of writing, but as I went through Juniper, I allowed myself to experiment and try new things, and because of that, my writing has transformed over the past few months. Juniper planted a creative seed and since it has only bloomed. Words cannot express how grateful I am to have received the scholarship that allowed me to attend Juniper. Juniper enhanced my thinking and writing in a way that I don’t think many other experiences could have. I do not think I could be the writer I am today without those wonderful nine days, and for that I am incredibly thankful.”

Experiences like the ones Olivia, Maria, and Asha had are why we love working with programs to offer our students a summer they won’t forget. Applications for next year’s Scholastic Awards Summer Scholarship Program open in the spring of 2018. The first step to being considered for a summer scholarship is submitting work to the 2018 Scholastic Awards. Don’t wait–summer will be here before you know it!
