What role will design play in the future of visual arts education? Three Scholastic Awards alums—Sarah Devlin, Samuel Hooper, and Brett Goliff—will explore this question in their panel Young Creatives Talk Innovation and Design at the annual National Art Education Association Conference on March 25 in New Orleans. The interactive session will look at ways in which design informs our constructions of place and space. This group of practicing artists, all innovators in their fields, will bring a fresh perspective on the intersection of design and arts education.

Meet the Panelists

Sarah Devlin is a 2012 Gold Medal Art Portfolio recipient whose experimental short films have earned awards at the Louisiana Film Fest, the YoungArts Cinematic Arts Competition, Gambit’s 40 Under 40 Award, The Women and Minorities in Media Fest, and many more. A New Orleans native, Sarah continues to work as an independent video artist in the Big Easy, and currently teaches Media Arts to 3rd-5th graders at Lusher Elementary School’s after-school arts program.

In 2005, Samuel Hooper received a Gold Medal for his Art Portfolio and has combined his artistry with his love of science to forge his own path as a practicing artist while working as a backcountry ranger for Denali National Park in Alaska. During his tenure with the Park Service, his medium for exploring the world shifted from charcoal and bronze to Geographic Information Science. Sam is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Geography at Oregon State University.

Brett Golliff is a designer determined to create products that solve problems, while evoking an emotional connection for the consumer. After receiving his Gold Key in 2001, Brett has focused on designing products that look forward. He worked for New Balance for nearly four years and is currently the Lead Designer in Color & Trim for Chevrolet Performance.

Together, these alums will join forces to share their insights and creative approaches to incorporate design into daily living and arts education. Their session at the conference includes your input, a plenary that goes beyond the traditional Q&A format, and an opportunity to network with peers.
