On a gorgeous Wednesday evening, the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and some of its good friends got together for a night full of art, music, and fun. now on paper, which took place on March 7, provided an opportunity for guests to view and purchase original works on paper by emerging artists as well as take part in a silent auction featuring works from the Atelier, our first Artist in Residency program.
Guests sipped cocktails as they strolled the space to check out the incredible artwork, while enjoying the rocking sounds of 1989 Scholastic Awards alum Myla Goldberg’s art-punk band The Walking Hellos. Participating artists were all past winners of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, which has an 89-year legacy and a roster of famous winners including Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, Sylvia Plath, Joyce Carol Oates, and Richard Avedon.
One of the biggest highlights of the night was the “flash mob” readings. As Executive Director Virginia McEnerney addressed the crowd, she was interrupted by a young man who started to perform a reading of Scholastic Awards alum Richard Avedon’s award-winning work, Wanderlust. At first, the crowd seemed confused by this sudden disruption. Soon after, another man began to read the award-winning work of another notable Scholastic Awards alum followed by another. The initial confusion of the audience from the disruption quickly dissipated as the crowd savored each creative and spontaneous moment. At the completion of each impromptu reading, “oooh’s”, “ahhh’s”, and “wow’s”, were heard around the room, followed by an applause. The last reading was done by Myla Goldberg, who read her own award-winning work.
Readings included:
- Wanderlust, written in 1941 by celebrated fashion and portrait photographer, Richard Avedon, at the age of 18.
- God Dies, written in 1931 by renowned screen and stage actress, Frances Farmer, at the age of 18.
- Three Deaths and the Child, written in 1951 by groundbreaking experimental filmmaker, Stan Brakhage, at the age of 18.
- Nine Bean Rows, written in 1968 by American author, Joyce Maynard, at the age of 15.
- Itch, written by musician and author of Bee Season, Myla Goldberg, at age 18.
